In this assignment, we focus on the most important concept of the entire course – the internet. We answer many questions such as ‘what is it’, ‘how does it work’, or ‘how can we use it for our benefit’? Once we’ve discussed many of the basics, it’s time to highlight some of my personal experiences on the web, especially in online education.
The Internet or ‘web’ itself is an incredibly expansive tool that has been evolving almost essentially since its creation. Even in my own experience, it’s hard to explain exactly what the web is. From an actual technical perspective, the web is an extensive server that pulls and relates information, URL’s, and content from other servers or computers where it is stored. The whole idea of computers being ‘processors’ actually makes sense because as a user requests something, it takes quite a bit of power to process and actually create a result. In my time spent with the UMC Admissions Office, terms like dynamic content have been used frequently, creating a little basis of JavaScript, a programming language used that can change as the user views it.
Now from my perspective, one of the most common uses for the internet is searching and combing through content. As a student, I have personally had to do this multiple times, in which the ability to better tailor your findings makes it that much easier. One the most crucial parts is definitely to fact check or actually read an entire article before choosing an answer with little or no background. Right away our article describes that you can add a few more precise words that can actually aid in weeding out a few excess sources. Next, you can actually fine-tune searches through separate settings, such as image or file type, color, or even date published. Obviously however, the most important way to optimize a search is to use your critical thinking. Not sure it accurately answers your question? Read through the full article!
In my experience, the internet can be such an incredible tool, you simply just have to be smart about it. In the internet as well as life in general, you must process through things and use your critical skills in order to determine what is or is not useful or even correct. I am always blown away by the amount of people that receive incorrect information because they actually just don’t read it through, they simply take the first sentence or two. Part of being a good user and even content developer, is creating a precise experience where information is easily accessible and as accurate as possible.
